MPBN: Home Series, Moving Image, 00:27:01

Land disputes, tensions about resource allocation and European wars combined to trigger intense strife and armed conflict between Maine's English, French and Native populations. The Frontier Wars were a series of six wars spanning nearly a century that devastated populations in Maine, and had a permanent and chilling effect on the relations between English settlers and Native Americans.

A Place Apart
MPBN: Home Series, Moving Image, 00:27:01

Maine is a place apart from the mainstream of American society. Beginning early in Maine’s history, settlers, merchants, visitors, artists, and writers brought images of Maine to the rest of the world that shaped the State's economy, identity, and heritage. The history behind the image of Maine remains a vital part of how we and those from away view Maine today.

They Came By Sea
MPBN: Home Series, Moving Image, 00:28:01

Europeans arrived here by sea, attracted by the region's phenomenal fisheries and the natural resources visible on the coast. At first, they weren't interested in establishing permanent settlements but, as an appreciation for the economic value of Maine's natural resources grew, colonial settlement began. Today, Maine continues to rely on the economic advantages available through the natural resources of the coast.

Brunswick and Topsham, Map #12
Maine Historical Society, Still Image

This is one of a collection of maps surveyed for the Pejepscot Proprietors to show boundaries and land ownership in the areas of what are now known as Brunswick and Topsham, Maine. Scale [1:35,640] 4.5 furlongs = 1 inch. During the years of the Pejepscot proprietors' efforts to settle their holdings, three of the Indian wars were fought: the fourth or Lovewell's War, 1722-1726; the fifth or King George's War, 1744-1748; the sixth or French and Indian War, 1754-1759. These conflicts delayed settlement of the Pejepscot Company's land, and their history is reflected in the documents in this collection.
